Have you watched the 2007 movie The Mist? This movie is based on Stephen King’s sci-fi novel of the same name. It shows how one small town reacts to what appears to be the apocalypse. If you remember the movie or watch it now, you might recognize some of the actors. Several have ended up on The Walking Dead. Is this just a coincidence?
Melissa McBride, Laurie Holden, and Jeffery DeMunn can all be seen in the movie for at least a little bit. On The Walking Dead McBride plays Carol Peltier, Holden played Andrea Harrison, and DeMunn played Dale Horvath. On the show they fight off “Walkers” in a post-apocalyptic world. In The Mist they fight off deadly creatures in what they think is the apocalypse; it turns out these creatures are from another dimension.
In The Mist all three of the actors’ characters start in a store to pick up supplies not knowing what is going to happen. Slowly a mist rolls through and with it comes giant creatures that attack everything in their way. Melissa McBride’s character runs home to get her children while most of the others stay behind. The group at the store divides into two groups and fight not only the creatures, but each other.
Just like on The Walking Dead, humanity is their own worst enemy. One group is led by a “religious” woman who blames the military for letting these creatures in. They take it out on a soldier and go against the other group.
That happens over and over again on The Walking Dead. There have been the Termites and now there is Negan and his “Saviors”. They have to fight other human beings more than they have to fight the zombies. Some make it through battles and some don’t. The same themes run through both the movie and the show. The monsters might be different but humanity stays the same in both.
Have you ever wondered if this movie helped these actors to get their roles on The Walking Dead or at least prepared them for the show? Do you see the similarities between them?
One extra piece of trivia: Frank Darabont wrote the screenplay for The Mist and is a creator/writer for The Walking Dead.
