Star Trek: Discovery has found their leading lady! It has been officially announced that Sonequa Martin-Green, who currently plays Sasha on AMC's The Walking Dead, has nabbed the lead role in CBS All Access' digital Star Trek reboot.
While this is extremely exciting for many reasons (like 1. Martin-Green is a phenomenal talent, and 2. It's great to see CBS cast a POC in the leading role), TWD fans shouldn't fret just yet that the heroic and tortured Sasha isn't long for this world. It's entirely possible that alternating filming schedules would allow Martin-Green to maintain a presence on each show. As The Hollywood Reporter remarked, TWD's seventh season has already finished filming and the show wouldn't pick up again until next summer, leaving plenty of time to devote to Star Trek.
Fans also shouldn't get too comfy either. The Walking Dead has a penchant for killing off its main characters, especially around season premieres/finales. It's entirely possible we'll see more beloved characters leave us come the end of the season, and Sasha would definitely be a tough one to bear. But let's avoid too much speculation this early on and just enjoy the fact that we'll be getting an extra dose of Sonequa on our screens!
Star Trek: Discovery will also star Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh and Doug Jones and will premiere in May. Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) was previously attached as showrunner, but has since stepped down so he can focus on another one of his projects, Starz's American Gods. Taking over for him are Executive Producers Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts.
