Good news dystopian Sci-fi fans, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is being made into a television series by Hulu. Some of you may have read the award winning novel, some may have even seen the 1990 film of the same name staring Natasha Richardson, Faye Dunaway and Aiden Quinn. Now Hulu is bringing this sci-fi classic back as a television series. The good news is that Margaret Atwood is attached so the show as Executive Producer so it should be in good hands.
If you don't know anything about the book or film here is a brief synopsis.
The world, or at least the USA is under a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship. Because of pollution there are only a few women that are fertile. Kate is caught trying to escape and is sentenced to become a handmaid as she is still one of the few that are still fertile. Kate is put through rigorous training and eventually sent to serve the Commander and his barren wife. Her job is to bear children for him. Kate is now called Offred (of- Fred) and has to live the life of a handmaid. I won’s spoil the plot any more and as it is as TV adaptation it is hard to say if they will change anything.
So far we have only had the Offred, Moira,Nick and Aunt Lydia casting news, but these casting choices have been pretty good. Ann Dowd has been cast as Aunt Lydia based on her performance in The Leftovers this is spot on casting. Moira is rumoured to be Samira Wiley from Orange is the New Black, now i haven't seen this show, the amount of positive press the show has had this can only be a good thing. Elizabeth Moss is Offred/Kate, she comes from some great dramas, The West Wing and Mad Men to name two. Finally Max Minghella has been cast as Nick, offred’s love interest, the British born actor has also a great resume and potentially is a great casting.
The show is likely to air in 2017 as it is in pre-production at the current time. I loved the book and the 1990 film so i am certainly looking forward to this adaptation and hope it lives up to my and other fan expectations.
