Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale has added some more cast members and I have to say I am not disappointed. The show which was first adapted as a film back in 1990 is probably long overdue for an update. It may seem in the current climate that this is striking too close to home for some. The Hulu adaptation will consist of 10 episodes which will premiere in its entirety on Hulu on 26th April 2017.

In case you are unfamiliar with the story the world, or at least the USA , is under a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship. Because of pollution there are only a few women that are fertile. Kate is caught trying to escape and is sentenced to become a handmaid as she is still one of the few that are still fertile. Kate is put through rigorous training and eventually sent to serve the Commander and his barren wife. Her job is to bear children for him. Kate is now called Offred (of- Fred) and has to live the life of a handmaid. I won’s spoil the plot any more and as it is as TV adaptation it is hard to say if they will change anything from the book, however the 10 episodes will allow it to explore a lot more than the film could.

Among the cast are Elisabeth Moss (The West Wing) as Offred, Samira Wiley (Orange is the New Black) as Moira, Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck) as Serena Joy and Joseph Fiennes (Flash forward) as Commander Waterford. Plus Max Minghella (The Mindy Project) as Nick, Madeline Brewer (Orange is the New Black) as Janine, Ann Dowd (The Leftovers) as Aunt Lydia  and O-T Fagbenle (The Five) as Luke. — see below for some new photos of them in character.
